Why Monee? Terrell's Eat The Bone BBQ

Terrell’s Eat the Bone BBQ, where their smoked barbeque makes you want to eat the bone.

Owned by Carol and Gerard Terrell, the restaurant originated from a concept Gerard envisioned in 1985. In 2017 they began to make big steps towards this dream, starting out with a successful mobile truck, catering to events. The restaurant has since been voted the Best Restaurant in Monee by Illinois State Representative Jackie Hass and the best BBQ by Restaurant Guru.

Terrell’s specializes in barbecue using real wood to get the smoke flavor: a concept inspired by his grandfather, who taught him the art of BBQing rib tips, brisket, pulled pork, and rubs. “My grandfather taught my brother and I how to cook when we were little,” Gerard explained, “and we just stand and watch him. And so, we took part of his old school recipe, added our niche to it.” Menu items include a mean coleslaw recipe by Carol’s grandmother. A recipe so good, in fact, that the owners mentioned one regular customer who would just come in and order macaroni and cheese and coleslaw, sitting in the corner to enjoy it. Not only is their menu inspired by a rich tradition of homemade family recipes, but it is also dynamic and ever-changing. Carol explained that most of the stuff that’s on the menu board comes from the customers, who expressed interest in those selections.

In 2021 they saw a need for a BBQ place in Monee. After receiving community feedback, they settled at 25655 S Governors Hwy, creating an experience for customers beyond just serving food, making them feel welcome and part of the Terrell’s family. On any given day, the smoke from Terrell’s barbeque cooking creates an amazing aroma that draws customers in as they drive by the restaurant. As you approach the counter, be sure to glance to your right and check out the chalkboard filled with customer comments and reviews. Terrell’s invites you to share your thoughts with the prompt, “Tell us what you think about our place.”Among the heartfelt messages, you’ll find glowing reviews praising the authentic BBQ, calling it the “Best BBQ ever!” and celebrating it as “the REAL deal.” Others express their delight, saying, “This food made my heart smile,” “This food is DELICIOUS!!!!” and “Eat the Bone BBQ will have you EAT to the bone, for sure!” One satisfied customer even declared, “Finest BBQ I’ve ever had—worth the travel.” The owners described the atmosphere as a "happy dance" where customers eat and feel like they're dancing. The walls are covered with decorations gifted by residents and customers, each with its own story, creating a very personal, family-oriented feel. To foster a sense of community, they have board games like checkers and chess on the tables for parents that come in and teach their kids how to play the games with their hands.

The owners explained that the name originated from a competition they had done years ago. During the competition, they were serving their smoked meats. One of the customers took a bite of the meat, looked up at the owners, and exclaimed: "Man, this makes you want to eat the bone!"The owners said that 15 years later, when they were starting their barbecue business, that memorable quote from the customer popped back into their minds. They decided to use it as the inspiration for the business name, which became "Terrell's Eat the Bone. The owners felt the name captured the authentic, hands-on experience they wanted to provide to their customers - where people could truly enjoy the barbecue meat down to the bone.
